Common pre-defined HVAC System Types with default configurations are available to select in Asset Score. Selecting one of the HVAC System Types listed below from the HVAC System Type pull down menu when adding an HVAC System will automatically populate the default system components listed in the table below. These (and other) system types may also be manually added and edited in Full input mode by selecting the associated Equipment types, and the Cooling and Heating sources. Heating fuel types listed are defaults that may be edited, except for Heat Pumps which may only be assigned electricity in the tool.

Additional data entry notes for selected systems, including DOAS appear below the table.

* Asset Score Data Entry Notes:

VAV with Hot-Water Reheat and VAV with Electric Reheat – For water-cooled chillers, first add a Condenser Plant Loop with a Cooling Tower Plant, then add a Cooling Plant Loop with a Chiller Plant and select the Condenser Loop so the Chiller Plant Loop and Condenser Plant Loop are linked.

Ventilation Only – Available as a selection for Air Handlers, a ventilation only (no cooling, no heating) system may only be assigned to a block with Parking Garage (Ventilation Only) selected as the use type.

Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) – Available only as a selection from the System Type pull down menu on the Air Handlers screen, the following configurations are supported for DOAS Systems:

Cooling SourceHeating SourceDistribution TypeFan Control
No CoolingNo HeatingNACAV or VAV
DX CoolingFurnace (Gas Fired or Electric Resistance)Single Zone or Multi ZoneCAV or VAV
DX CoolingHeat PumpSingle ZoneCAV or VAV
Plant (Chilled Water)Plant (Hot Water)Single Zone or Multi ZoneCAV or VAV

In addition:

Two component entries need to be created and assigned for a DOAS. DOAS is considered to be a 'Ventilation' system, and will need to have either another Air Handler or a Zone Equipment added and assigned to a block as the 'Primary Heating/Cooling System' to complete the HVAC System entry.

A DOAS may be combined with any Zone Equipment System Type except Baseboards or Radiators, and any Air Handler without plant loops, and with single zone distribution and constant volume fan control.

Convective Baseboard: Electric – May be added as a Secondary Heating and Cooling System to a block after either a Window Air Conditioner, Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner, or Four Pipe Fan Coil Unit system has been created and assigned.

Convective Baseboard: Hot Water – May be added as a Secondary Heating and Cooling System to a block after either a Window Air Conditioner, Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner, or Four Pipe Fan Coil Unit system has been created and assigned. A Heating Plant Loop must be created and linked to this selection.

Radiator – May be added as a Secondary Heating and Cooling System to a block after either a Window Air Conditioner, Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner, or Four Pipe Fan Coil Unit system has been created and assigned. A Heating Plant Loop must be created and linked to this selection.

Exhaust Fans – Two component entries need to be created and assigned for Exhaust Fans which are considered to be a 'Ventilation' system. They will need to have either another Air Handler or a Zone Equipment added and assigned to a block as the 'Primary Heating/Cooling System' to complete the HVAC System entry. Exhaust Fans may be combined with any Zone Equipment System Type except Baseboard.

Water-Loop Heat Pump (WLHP) – Available as a selection for Zone Equipment. Follow the steps below to create:

  1. Add a Condenser Plant Loop
  2. Select Cooling Tower as the Condenser Plant Type
  3. Add a Boiler Plant using the ‘Add a Boiler’ button
  4. Add Zone Equipment and select ‘Water-Loop Heat Pump’ from the HVAC System Type pull down menu
  5. Note that the Cooling/Heating Source, Fuel Type, and Condenser Type fields will have been automatically populated
  6. Select the Cooling Tower Condenser Plant Loop that was created in step one

Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) – Available as a selection for Zone Equipment. Follow the steps below to create:

  1. Add a Condenser Plant Loop
  2. Select Ground Heat Exchanger as the Condenser Plant Type
  3. Add Zone Equipment and select ‘Ground Source Heat Pump’ from the HVAC System Type pull down menu
  4. Note that the Cooling/Heating Source, Fuel Type, and Condenser Type fields will have been automatically populated
  5. Select the Ground Heat Exchanger Condenser Plant Loop that was created in step one

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) – Available as a selection for Zone Equipment. First add a VRF Condenser Unit, then add a Zone Equipment and select the VRF Condenser Unit so that they are linked. VRF Condenser Units may be combined with a DOAS.

Note: DOAS, VRF, WLHP, and GSHP system types are available only for selection in Full Input Mode. Additional default system components for Fan Control, Terminal Unit, and Condenser Loop Type are listed in Appendix C of the Data Collection Form.
