Roofs, walls and floors may be identified as ‘interior surfaces marking project boundaries’ (surfaces that cannot transfer heat) in TSPR.  There may be times, where you want to generate a TSPR for a portion of a building instead of the entire building. This might be the case if only a portion of the building has an HVAC system or a use type that can be analyzed by TSPR (see examples below).

For such scenarios, select a block on the Construction screen, and select the ‘Interior surface marking project boundary’ checkbox for the Roof and/or Floor where applicable.  For Walls, select the 'Edit Surfaces' button and select individual walls and the checkbox to assign as 'Interior surface marking project boundary' surfaces.

This will prevent over estimation of heat transfer from surfaces that would have otherwise been modeled as exterior walls, roofs and/or floors.

Examples:

See the example images below which include:

1. Building 1: a building with an office space adjacent to a warehouse. Here only the office portion needs to comply with TSPR approach, warehouse portion does not.

2. Building 2: a building with an office space above a post office. Here, only the office portion of the buildings needs to comply with TSPR the post office does not.

3. Building 3: Multifamily building where a portion of the dwelling unit is both heated and cooled and the other portion is heated only. The heated only portion of the dwelling unit does not need to comply with TSPR as HVAC systems with no mechanical cooling are exempt from TSPR requirements.

Entry and configuration steps:

Building 1:

  1. Create a block and assign the Office use type.
  2. Create and assign a Wall to the block from the Construction screen.
  3. Click on the 'Edit Surfaces' button.
  4. Click on the surface that would be adjacent to the warehouse.
  5. Select the ‘Interior surface marking project boundary’ checkbox for that surface only.

Building 2:

  1. Create a block and assign the Office use type.
  2. Create and assign a Floor to the block from the Construction screen.
  3. Click on the block.
  4. Select the ‘Interior surface marking project boundary’ checkbox for the Floor.

Building 3:

  1. Create a 'L' shape block for the heated and cooled portion of the building and assign the 'Multifamily-Dwelling Unit' use type.
  2. In the 'Construction' tab, select 'Edit Surfaces' and select the surface adjacent to the 'Heated Only' Portion of the building.
  3. Select the 'Interior surface marking project boundary' checkbox for that wall.
  4. The 'Heated Only' portion of the dwelling unit is not modeled and that system doesn't need to comply with TSPR requirements.
